The Ultimate Moving Checklist for 2026

Moving to a new home is one of life's biggest transitions, and staying organized is the key to a smooth relocation. Whether you're moving across town or across the country, this comprehensive checklist will guide you through every step of the process.

8 Weeks Before Moving Day

Start by researching and booking your moving company. Get at least three in-home estimates to compare pricing and services. This is also the time to begin decluttering — go room by room and decide what to keep, donate, sell, or discard.

Create a moving binder or digital folder to keep all your important documents, estimates, and receipts in one place. Notify your landlord if you're renting, and start researching schools, doctors, and services in your new area.

6 Weeks Before Moving Day

Begin gathering packing supplies: boxes, tape, bubble wrap, packing paper, and markers. Start packing items you won't need before the move, such as seasonal decorations, books, and guest room items.

Notify important parties about your address change: banks, insurance companies, subscriptions, and the post office. Schedule utility disconnections at your current home and connections at your new one.

4 Weeks Before Moving Day

Continue packing room by room, labeling each box with its contents and destination room. Take photos of electronics setups before disconnecting them — this makes reassembly much easier.

Confirm your moving date and details with your moving company. Arrange for pet care or childcare on moving day. Start using up perishable food items.

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

Pack a "first night" box with essentials: toiletries, medications, a change of clothes, phone chargers, basic kitchen items, and important documents. Confirm all travel arrangements if you're moving long distance.

Disassemble large furniture and bag all hardware in labeled zip-lock bags. Clean out your refrigerator and defrost the freezer.

Moving Day

Do a final walkthrough of your home, checking all closets, cabinets, and storage areas. Verify the inventory list with your movers. Keep your essentials box, valuables, and important documents with you — not on the truck.

At your new home, direct movers to place boxes in the correct rooms. Check all items against your inventory list and note any damage immediately.

After the Move

Unpack systematically, starting with the kitchen and bedrooms. Update your driver's license and vehicle registration. Explore your new neighborhood and introduce yourself to neighbors.

Remember, a successful move is all about planning ahead. The earlier you start, the smoother your transition will be.
