Expert Packing Tips to Protect Your Fragile Items

Protecting fragile items during a move requires the right materials, proper technique, and a little patience. Our professional movers have packed millions of items over the years, and here are their top tips for keeping your valuables safe.

Choose the Right Materials

Not all packing materials are created equal. For fragile items, invest in quality supplies:

  • Dish pack boxes: These double-walled boxes provide extra protection for dishes and glassware.
  • Packing paper: Unprinted newsprint is ideal — regular newspaper can leave ink stains.
  • Bubble wrap: Use it generously for extra-fragile items.
  • Foam pouches: Perfect for plates and picture frames.
  • Packing peanuts: Fill voids in boxes to prevent shifting.
  • The Golden Rule: Wrap Individually

Never let fragile items touch each other inside a box. Wrap each piece individually with packing paper or bubble wrap, securing with tape. This creates a protective cushion between items.

    Pack Plates Vertically

Contrary to what many people think, plates are strongest when packed on their edge, like records in a crate. Place crumpled paper on the bottom of the box, then stand wrapped plates vertically with paper between each one.

    The Crumple Test

Before sealing any box of fragile items, gently shake it. If you hear movement, add more packing material. A properly packed box should feel solid with no shifting contents.

    Electronics Require Special Care

If you have original boxes for electronics, use them. Otherwise, wrap each device in anti-static bubble wrap and use plenty of cushioning. Photograph cable configurations before disconnecting anything.

    Artwork and Mirrors

Use picture boxes or create custom protection with cardboard and bubble wrap. Mark an "X" with painter's tape across glass surfaces — if the glass breaks, the tape helps contain the shards.

    Label Everything

Mark fragile boxes clearly on multiple sides with "FRAGILE" and "THIS SIDE UP" indicators. Your movers will handle these boxes with extra care when they're properly labeled.

Following these professional techniques will significantly reduce the risk of damage during your move. And remember, if packing feels overwhelming, our team offers full and partial packing services to take the stress off your shoulders.
